Documentary

Blakeway is a leading independent producer of television and radio documentaries for the UK and international markets.  We have a wealth of skill and experience in documentary-making, covering history, science, art, religion, politics and current affairs.  Blakeway’s documentaries unit is run by Executive Producers Denys Blakeway and Fiona Stourton.

Denys Blakeway set up Blakeway Productions in 1994.  Since then Blakeway has produced numerous blue chip documentaries for major British and international broadcasters.  Critical and ratings successes include ‘The Queen's Story’ for ITV1, ‘Hidden Treasure Houses’ for Five, ‘Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World’ and ‘The War of The World’, presented by Niall Ferguson for Channel 4, ‘Churchill’s Forgotten Years’ and ‘The Improbable Mr. Attlee’, presented by Professor David Reynolds for the BBC, the Emmy nominated docu-drama ‘9/11: The Twin Towers’ co-produced with Dangerous Films for the BBC and Discovery, ‘Abdication: A Very British Coup’ for the BBC and ‘The Last Days of Tony Blair’ for Channel 4, in which journalist Will Hutton gained unprecedented access to Tony Blair in his last three months in power.

In 2004 Blakeway was bought by the factual media company Ten Alps PLC.  Three years later, Blakeway merged with another award-winning Ten Alps production company, 3BM Television.  3BM’s programme credits include the Emmy-winning docu-drama ‘Ten Days to D-Day’, and Bafta-winning docu-drama ‘Nuremberg: Goering’s Last Stand’, both for Channel 4, and the high rating ‘Zero Hour’ series for Discovery.

Fiona Stourton joined Blakeway as an Executive Producer from the BBC in 2006, bringing an expertise in current affairs to Blakeway’s documentary portfolio.  Since joining Blakeway, Fiona has executive produced several hard-hitting current affairs investigations, including ‘Britain Under Attack’, an investigation into the UK Muslim terror threat, and ‘Kidnapped to Order’, how America captures, detains and interrogates those suspected of terrorism, both made for Channel 4’s ‘Dispatches’ strand, and investigations into black gang culture and the poisoning of ex-KGB man Litvinenko for BBC’s ‘Panorama’. Fiona is now Blakeway's Managing Director.

In 2006, Blakeway started making radio documentaries for BBC Radio 4. 'Writing the Royals' and 'Royal Tours' were broadcast in 2006.  'Rocking Scots', 'The Cavern Club', ‘Bullying.com’, ‘The Elvis Effect’ and the high profile ‘The Clinton Years’, presented by Gavin Esler, were all broadcast in 2007 on BBC Radio 4.
