Victim's son to front Madoff documentary

The son of a British soldier who killed himself after his family's life savings were swallowed up in Bernie Madoff's $50bn swindle is to front a BBC2 doc on the subject.

The 60-minute film, titled Madoff, will be produced by Ten Alps indie Blakeway Productions for the channel's This World strand.

In it, Willard Foxton travels to America to find out why Madoff was not stopped, where the money has gone, and how the crime has impacted everyone from normal citizens to celebrities, banks and schools.Madoff was exposed in December last year for operating a Ponzi scheme which defrauded thousands of investors. Foxton's father Bill, an MBE and decorated solider, killed himself after being bankrupted by the scheme.

Managing director Fiona Stourton described the documentary as a "compelling parable for our times" which "turned into a gripping detective story as Willard Foxton's investigation into the financial swindle has also turned into a surprising journey into his own father's past". Madoff was directed by Roger Corke and executive produced by Stourton. It was commissioned by Lucy Hetherington for BBC2 and is earmarked to air in June following Madoff's sentence.
