Motownship - Ten Alps produces radio show in celebration of Motown's 50th birthday
Motown has been celebrating its 50th birthday this year. To mark the occasion, Midge Ure travels to Cape Town to meet a group of young township musicians who are using traditional African instruments to record covers of classic Motown and soul hits. Their unique musical style – Township Jazz – combines traditional African instruments, with brass, a capella and gospel vocals. Abavuki is a group of 10 aspiring young musicians from Langa, Cape Town's oldest, and one of South Africa's toughest, black townships. Midge gets under the skin of how two cultures are coming together for the benefit of an entire community.
